There is much confusion around the ability to cast a touch spell on your own character in the game; however, with the ability to touch your own character as well as the other characters around you, casting a touch spell on yourself is fair game.

Cure Wounds Spell

The cure wounds spell works on all creatures in the game—except for the undead or constructs. The attributes of the spell are as follows:

Once the cure wounds spell is cast, the creature you are targeting will need to be touched, which gives them a number of hit points that are equal to 1d8 plus your spellcasting ability modifier.

Does This Spell Hurt the Undead?

The cure wounds spell will not work on the undead, however, unlike other spells that will affect the undead, this spell will not injure or damage the undead. The undead can be affected by humanoid spells and can be healed with a variety of different spells including:

  • A short or long rest
  • A potion of healing
  • Healer feat
  • The regenerate spell

Knowing the differences and intricacies of each spell is vital for your success in Dungeons and Dragons, as many spells do not work as you would anticipate based on their names.

Can Cure Wounds Regrow Limbs?

Cure wounds spell helps heal most major wounds you or a fellow player/character may receive throughout the game. However, lost limbs can only be healed by the regenerate spell.

For players who do not want to use the regenerate spell, you also have the option of replacing your limb with a prosthetic.

Mass Cure Wounds

The mass cure wounds spell differs from the cure wounds spell in that it has a range of 60 feet, affects different classes, and is a wave of healing energy that originates at a point of your choosing. Some of the attributes of this spell include:

When casting this spell, you are able to choose up to six creatures within a 30-foot-radius that is centered at a point. Each target hit by this spell will regain hit points equal to 3d8 plus your spellcasting ability modifier. Not unlike the cure wounds spell, this also does not have an effect on undead or constructs.

Can You Use Invisibility on Yourself?

This is also another spell that requires touch. Many times, in the game, you are required to choose a character that must be hostile or a fellow player. However, there aren’t any restrictions on who you cast this spell on, so players can use invisibility on themselves.

This is another example of a touch spell that can be used on your own player due to the freedom to touch your own character throughout the game.

Spells That Have Changed in the Fifth Edition

In the 5th edition of Dungeons and Dragons, there are four spells that have changed for the worse that players should be aware of:

  1. Hypnotic pattern
  2. Counterspell
  3. Banishment
  4. Conjure Animals

Designers altered the way these spells work, making these particular moves increasingly difficult.

Hypnotic Pattern

This spell forces every creature in a specified region to make a Wisdom save, which in turn saves them from being incapacitated. In older versions of the game, a number of foes could be incapacitated to then kill off easily as they are frozen in time, however this number was limited.

In the fifth edition of the game, the hit-die limit was removed. Simply speaking, this means that the character casting this spell can no longer choose who is saved; rather, now all creatures avoid becoming incapacitated with this spell.

Many players think that this spell should have kept a hit-point limit; however, it is important to remember that this limit is no longer a factor when players are considering which spell to cast.

Counter Spell

This is a new spell in the 5th edition, that removes the need for characters to battle against spell effects. Some players feel like this takes some of the fun out of the game.


This is another spell that many players think could have been left out of version five as the game flourished without it for 11 years. This spell allows you to banish a foe, however, if your concentration get brokent then the foe comes back into the game. This allows for the foe to still come out of the fight successful, rendering the banishment spell useless for your gain.

Conjure Animals

This spell gives players the option of conjuring any creature in any quantity, this can result in an instant change to the game. By conjuring large numbers of a certain creature, the spells cast or result of those animals coming into play can get out of hand and out of the control of the player.

Closing Thoughts

While there are many changes to the newest 5th version of Dungeons and Dragons that do not please players, there are also benefits. Being able to touch your character opens up an ability to utilize spells such as the cure wounds and invisibility spells.

This can benefit your character in your game while other new spells in the 5th edition, such as the banishment or counterspell can alter the way your game plays out potentially hurting your character or game development.

The most important thing to remember going into your 5th edition game is that many rules and spells have changed since your 4th edition game, be sure to read up on new rules and spells to ensure a successful game!
